What is Breast Implant Illness (BII)?  And what can we do for you!

Implants that surgeons use for breast augmentation procedures are approved as safe by the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Some implants are defined as “silicone,” while others are “saline,” but in fact, both types of breast implants contain a wide range of other chemicals. Many women experience an equally wide range of health problems after their breast augmentation, and they blame the implants.

This condition is called Breast Implant Illness, or BII. Internationally renowned aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon says his Beverly Hills practice has seen enormous interest in this subject from women across the US, Canada, and Europe. Women turn to him because he is a pioneer in resolving breast implant illness.

Now Dr. Ordon and other surgeons on our team here at Beverly Hills Sunset Surgery Center International in Dubai are leading the way in helping women worldwide address this alarming problem.

Should you worry about Breast Implant Illness (BII)?

Implants are not benign within the body. They contain more than 40 different toxic chemicals. The shells, or capsules, are in fact semi-permeable. Over time, implants can negatively affect the body’s metabolic, neurological, endocrine, immune, digestive and gastrointestinal systems. Symptoms typically show up within 1-4 years following implant surgery and can vary tremendously from one person to another.

The most common early symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Memory loss
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain
  • Hair loss
  • Dryness throughout the body
  • Recurring infections
  • Stomach and gut issues
  • Rashes
  • Food and/or chemical sensitivities
  • Anxiety
  • Thyroid or adrenal problems

If any of this sounds familiar, there is a Facebook group specifically devoted to Healing Breast Implant Illness. Its goal is to inform, support and educate women fighting this illusive health problem.

The entire list of symptoms reported by women is far longer. As yet there are no studies that prove direct links between these symptoms and breast implants, but the patterns are concerning. In May 2019, the FDA said in a safety announcement, “While the FDA doesn’t have definitive evidence demonstrating breast implants cause these symptoms, the current evidence supports that some women experience systemic symptoms that may resolve when their breast implants are removed.”

En-Bloc Capsulectomy eliminates the source

You can take direct action, by having your implants removed. Dr. Ordon is a proponent of this surgical remedy – called an En-Bloc Capsulectomy -- in cases where there is evidence or even just a suspicion or belief that implants are causing symptoms.

“There are times when a patient who has breast implants wants them out,” he says. “This may be because of unexplained symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, joint pains, muscle pain, rashes or a host of other things. For some women, breast tissue enlarges with age or they just don’t want implants anymore.”

En-Bloc Capsulectomy removes the implant and capsule surrounding it together, in a single unit, without disturbing natural breast tissue and chest muscles. This ensures more complete removal of all tissue and material relating to breast implants, giving patients a “fresh start.” Often, patients choose to have a breast lift at the same time. The lift and accompanying fat transfer can help replace contouring previously provided by the implants and prevent loose skin and sagging that might otherwise occur after implant removal.

Dr. Ordon says women have been flying to his Beverly Hills office from all over the country for this procedure. “Although hard science is not there, many women want en-bloc removal of implants, with lifting and fat transfer. They feel better after.”
