What is this procedure?
Tummy tuck is one of the most popular cosmetic enhancement surgeries. It is just what the name implies – a procedure that removes excess fat and, if called for, excess skin to restore smoother, sleeker abdominal contouring. A tummy tuck is a highly individualized procedure, so it can address loose skin and fat above and/or below the waist. Many women choose this procedure as part of a Mommy Makeover.
Liposuction is similar to the Tummy Tuck but is more extreme and considered a major surgery. Learn more about Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction procedures to see which one is right for you!
What does a tummy tuck involve?
Whether you choose a full procedure (to eliminate excess fat and skin above and below the waist) or a mini-tuck (below the waist only), it will be performed an outpatient procedure in our state-of-the-art surgical facility. Patient safety is paramount at BHSSCI. Your surgeon may recommend either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
The surgeon will make a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen between the belly button and pubic line. Exact placement and length depend on how much fat and excess skin need to be removed. For a full tummy tuck, the surgeon may also make another incision around the belly button to remove upper abdomen fat and/or skin. In this case, your belly button will be repositioned for a normal post-op appearance.
Once incisions are made, unwanted fat is removed, excess skin is trimmed away, and then remaining skin is sutured together. You will have a scar, though it will become less visible over time.
This is real surgery, so you can expect to spend a few weeks recuperating. During that time you will gradually return to normal activities and start to see the “new you” as healing continues.
Are you a good candidate for tummy tuck?
You are if you’re an adult who is tired of fighting your poochy abdominal fat and unsightly loose skin. The best candidates for any surgery are at a healthy, stable weight and don’t smoke. But the most important factor is realistic expectations. The only good reason to have cosmetic surgery is because you want it for yourself, not to please someone else. With that you must realize there is no such thing as a “perfect” body. If your goal is improvement, you’re looking good as a candidate for a tummy tuck.
