Breast Reduction vs. Breast Lift

Sometimes there is just too much of a good thing. And, as we age, even the best of body parts can start to sag. Take breasts, for example. A surprising number of women suffer from Hypertrophy, with breasts that are simply more than they can comfortably handle. And, no matter your breast size as a young woman, age takes its toll. No wonder both breast reduction and breast lift surgeries are so popular.

Whether you’re looking for less or a lift, you want the best. So why not choose one of the world’s most prominent, talented, and experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeons – Dr. Andrew Ordon, MD, FACS. Famous for his work with Hollywood stars and the rich and famous worldwide, and celebrated by his patients as a caring and careful surgeon, Dr. Ordon is also Chief Medical Director and Chief of Plastic Surgery at Beverly Hills Sunset Surgery Center International in Dubai.

Breast Lift vs. Breast Reduction

Why Breast Reduction?

For women whose breasts are overly large, the sheer size can interfere with sleep and make it difficult to buy well-fitting clothing. The heavy weight can cause breast, back, neck, and shoulder pain and even lead to other health problems. And while most women would welcome the opportunity to be “well-endowed,” too-large breasts can be a source of social discomfort instead of pride.

Men, too, can suffer from visibly enlarged breasts (one or both), a condition called Gynecomastia. This is usually the result of an imbalance between testosterone and estrogen within the body, so no amount of exercise can "tone" those breasts into a more masculine, sculpted chest. Many men feel their only option is to wear loose shirts that disguise their body.

Woman or man, breast reduction surgery can give you a fresh sense of self, with a revised shape that is as comfortable as it is attractive. What a relief!

The procedure

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general (or, in some cases, local) anesthesia. The surgeon removes excess fat, breast tissue, and skin and then repositions the remaining breast tissue as well as the areola and nipple to produce a pleasing shape, size, and overall appearance before closing the incisions.

In men, liposuction may be the only treatment needed to effectively remove excess fatty tissue. In some cases, reducing the size of the areola and/or repositioning the nipple may be recommended to create the most natural-looking male contouring.

In women of child-bearing age, every effort is made to retain mammary function. However, Dr. Ordon recommends that if you are nursing or considering a pregnancy, it’s best to wait on breast reduction surgery.

Patients can return to most everyday activities, including work if it’s not physically demanding, within two or three weeks. However, you may have to wear a compression garment for a few months.

Why Breast Lift?

You may look in the mirror and see breasts that droop, sag, or appear downturned. Doctors call that ptosis. Simply getting older may be the culprit, but pregnancy, breast feeding, and significant weight loss can also cause your breasts to lose their youthful perkiness. A breast lift is like a facelift for your chest, restoring a firmer, higher, more youthful shape. This procedure can provide particularly beneficial results for women with smaller to medium size breasts.

The procedure

Breast lift surgery is also an outpatient procedure. In this case, the surgeon makes carefully-placed incisions and then removes excess skin and breast tissue. If needed, the areola can also be repositioned higher, allowing the nipple to face forward. The final result is firmer with improved contouring.
