Every year, thousands of individuals elect to have breast augmentations in order to increase their cup size in an effective manner. If it’s something you’ve chosen for yourself, it’s important to become familiar with each stage of the process before having it done. At Beverly Hills Sunset Surgery Center International, Dubai, we can help.
While you might be nervous about the surgery, you can relax knowing a highly trained surgeon will be taking care of your procedure. The work for you begins when surgery is over, as you’ll have to take steps to properly heal. Below you’ll find the top tips to help make this process go more smoothly.
1. Wear the Support Garment
After surgery is finished, we will provide you with a bandeau support garment that stabilizes your breasts and helps prevent them from moving. This will help ensure the implants can properly settle while your body naturally begins the healing process. This garment also helps compress the impacted area, which can minimize your discomfort and reduce the amount of bruising you experience. It’s important to wear this for as long as your surgeon recommends in order to prevent any tearing in the incision site.
2. Rest and Avoid Moving
After breast surgery, rest is crucial to the healing process. While we know it can be tempting to want to get up and do things on your own, you must minimize the amount that you move. Not only will this help you avoid discomfort but it will also allow your body to focus on healing for long periods of time. Although your surgeon will give you specific instructions for how long you should minimize movement, the normal amount of time is roughly two weeks.
We highly recommend having a friend or family member stay with you for the first couple of weeks to help with everyday tasks. From cooking and cleaning to helping you go to the restroom, their assistance can allow you to move less.
3. Sleep in the Right Position
We give our patients specific instructions to sleep on their backs after breast augmentation. This helps ensure the breast implants are not moved around and they are not introduced to excess pressure from sleeping on your side or stomach. While we understand this can be uncomfortable at times, extra pillows can help you find a better sleeping position without compromising your implants.
4. Find Ways to Stay Positive
The first couple weeks of recovery can be difficult, especially since your daily activities will be limited. To help improve your outlook, find things each day that help you stay positive. This could mean a visit (or video chat) with a friend, watching some new movies, or reading a few good books. Know that recovery process doesn’t last forever and that relaxing is the best thing to do to encourage healing.
5. Take Prescribed Medication
You may be prescribed a few different types of medications, depending on what your surgeon decides is best for you. It’s important to have these filled before your surgery begins to ensure you have them on-hand once it’s over. Take these exactly as prescribed and let your doctor know if you experience any negative side effects. If you are prescribed painkillers, only use these for as long as it’s necessary before moving to an over-the-counter pain reliever.
6. Massage Your Breasts
It’s important to begin gently massaging your breast implants as soon as your surgeon recommends. We know this can be uncomfortable, but it’s a vital part of the recovery process and making sure your implants settle properly. Gentle massaging also helps prevent scar tissue from growing around the implants. Your surgeon may recommend other exercises that are important to do as often as you’re told is necessary.
Keep in mind that massaging and exercising your breasts shouldn’t be mistaken for traditional exercising. It’s still important to maximize the amount of time you rest so you can recover more quickly.
7. Don’t Smoke or Drink
We recommend avoiding alcohol for at least the first four weeks of recovery, as this can negatively interact with any medications you’ve been prescribed. In addition to this, alcohol causes dehydration and can greatly increase the amount of time it takes for your body to naturally heal. Smoking should also be avoided, as this introduces carbon monoxide into your blood that can increase the risk of complications. Smoking also reduces the amount of oxygen that can be carried in your blood, which can slow down the healing process.
8. Bathe Properly
Baths should be avoided for at least the first 2 weeks after your breast augmentation surgery is over. While it might sound soothing to soak in hot water, this can actually lead to infection and cause extreme discomfort at the incision site. To clean yourself, we recommend taking showers, but you must cover all wounds and dressings before you get in. If these do become wet, they should be immediately dried with a hairdryer set on low.
9. Clean the Incision Site
Cleaning the incision site can help speed up recovery while reducing the chance of an infection due to bacteria. To do this properly, begin by washing your hands with warm water and soap. After this, gently take off the compression garment followed by the tape and any dressing placed over the area. Use warm soapy water and a soft washcloth to clean the wound gently. To finish, apply new bandages and tape and replace the compression garment.
If you see any signs of infection, let us know right away. The sooner an infection is addressed, the less likely it is to spread and become a major problem.
10. Maintain Follow-Up Appointments
Our office will schedule post-op appointments in order to monitor your recovery and ensure healing is progressing as normal. This can give you peace of mind and an opportunity to ask any questions you might have. Your surgeon will also use this time to tell you what you can or can’t do, based on how well you’re healing. If any concerns arise in between these appoints, do not hesitate to contact us immediately.
